- mechanistic interpretability
Mech interp is the science of figuring out what is actually going on inside an AI model. Anthropic, Google DeepMind and OpenAI all work on it, and as the labs openly aim for superintelligence, it is one of the main ways anyone hopes to check what those systems are really doing.

Who’s talking about it
From AI lab CEOs to Bryan Johnson
“Our investment in Goodfire reflects our belief that mechanistic interpretability is among the best bets to help us transform black-box neural networks into understandable, steerable systems.”
“Mechanistic interpretability is trying to be the biology of AI.”
“…a field that has come to be known as mechanistic interpretability. […] When we founded Anthropic, we decided to make it a central part of the new company’s direction.”
“We certainly have not solved interpretability.”
“One approach, known as mechanistic interpretability, aims to map the key features and the pathways between them across an entire model.”
“It’s kind of how we’re trying to understand AI, a field called mechanistic interpretability where you take a black box and find the underlying circuits that explain the behavior.”
“We don’t program, we don’t make them, we grow them.”
Why it matters
As AI heads for superintelligence, someone has to be able to read it
The more capable the models get, the more it matters that someone can check what is going on inside them. That is the work mech interp does. Five years ago a handful of researchers were doing it. Now it’s hundreds, and the money has followed.
- Feb 2026
Goodfire, a startup built on interpretability, raises $150M at a $1.25B valuation, less than a year after a $50M Series A that Anthropic invested in.
- Jan 2026
MIT Technology Review names mechanistic interpretability one of its 10 Breakthrough Technologies of 2026, listing Anthropic, Google DeepMind and OpenAI among the players.
- By 2027
Anthropic’s stated goal: interpretability that can “reliably detect most model problems”.
- Jul 2025
America’s AI Action Plan calls for investment in “AI Interpretability, Control, and Robustness Breakthroughs”.
- 2024
Anthropic, OpenAI and Google DeepMind each publish research mapping millions of concepts inside their own models.
What it is
Reverse-engineering AI models
A trained AI model is billions of numbers that nobody wrote by hand. It works, but nobody can read it. Mechanistic interpretability is the effort to take a model apart and explain how it does what it does, much as a biologist works out how a cell functions or an engineer reverse-engineers a chip.
- Features
- Find what the model represents inside: concepts like a city, a programming language, deception or the Golden Gate Bridge.
- Circuits
- Trace how those pieces connect into the steps of a computation, like answering a two-step question or planning a rhyme before writing the line.
- Interventions
- Test the explanation by changing the internals. When Anthropic turned up one feature inside Claude, the model started bringing up the Golden Gate Bridge in almost every answer.
The goal is to check AI systems from the inside: to catch a model with a hidden goal, or one whose stated reasoning isn’t what it actually did. In a 2025 test, auditing teams using these tools uncovered a hidden objective that researchers had deliberately trained into a model.
